Preventive Dental Care

Artisan Family Dentistry Glendale AZ

Preventive

Preventive dentistry emphasizes the importance of regular visits to your dentist and daily practices at home to prevent tooth decay and other dental diseases and conditions.

The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends a minimum of two dental exams and cleanings each year to prevent minor issues from becoming major problems. This gives your dental professionals an opportunity to look for signs of trouble before they have time to progress further.

Patients also play an important role in preventive dentistry efforts, too. Self-care, such as twice daily brushing and daily flossing, is essential in ensuring that your teeth and mouth stay healthy. A good oral hygiene routine helps to keep your teeth clean during those six-month intervals between dental visits.

Preventive dentistry can result in less extensive – and less expensive – treatment for any dental conditions that may develop, and help you keep your natural teeth for a lifetime.

Maintaining and Caring For Your Oral Health

Comprehensive Exams

All new patients are thoroughly examined for oral health conditions at their first visit. If you have any concerns, Dr. Carson will personally sit and discuss your goals with you. Together, we will design treatment plan to meet your needs and expectations.

Hygiene

Most patients have their teeth cleaned every 6 months to help maintain their oral health and remove any tartar buildup that has formed between appointments. Depending on your periodontal condition, we may recommend more frequent visits. Our hygienists use ultrasonic instruments, which are more thorough than traditional instruments used for cleanings.

Visual Oral Cancer Screenings

You don’t have to be a smoker or drinker to be at risk for developing oral cancer. That’s why every patient will have a visual oral cancer screening at every visit to our office.

Intraoral Cameras

Don’t you just wish you could see inside of your mouth to know exactly what your dentist is talking about? That’s why we use intraoral cameras. Every image captured is projected onto a screen, which allows you to see the same thing your dentist sees.

Fluoride Treatments

Topical fluoride treatments are an effective way to deter cavities and remineralize weakened tooth enamel and prevent cavities. All children receive a fluoride treatment at each preventive care appointment, and it is highly recommended that adults also have fluoride treatment at least once per year.

Sealants

Sealants are extremely effective at preventing cavities from occurring on new teeth in children as well as adults who are prone to getting new decay. Sealants are basically very shallow fillings that are placed into the deeper grooves on back teeth, preventing food particles from collecting in the grooves and forming cavities. Placing sealants is a quick and painless non-invasive procedure – usually we are able to treat all necessary teeth in just a few minutes!

Mouth Guards

Custom-made mouth guards gently hug your teeth and stay securely in place, unlike over the counter guards, which can also cause TMJ problems if not fitted properly. We provide night guards for patients with bruxism or grinding habits, as well as custom sports guards for athletes.

Emergency Care

Emergencies can happen when you least expect them. A dental emergency can be one of the most uncomfortable things that you ever experience. That’s why we work hard to see patients as quickly as possible if they’re experiencing an emergency. If you call our office during business hours, we will fit you into our next open appointment slot. If it’s afterhours, please call our emergency line at 602-588-7777.

Anti-anxiety Medication

Are you nervous about seeing the dentist? Don’t worry, we offer prescription anti-anxiety medication for more in-depth procedures. After reviewing your medical history, Dr. Carson can discuss your options with you. Don’t let fear keep you from getting the treatment you need. Putting off necessary dental work will only make it more costly and invasive!
